John says...No, the streets definitely dont love you back. I came up on 16th and McGraw, was in the youth home by the time I was 14, was expelled from Northwestern High at fifteen, and got sent to live with my father on the east side and graduated from Denby with an athletic scholarship to WSU that transformed my life. I ended up beating Olympic champions on the U.S. Team in Europe and coaching state champs. I taught and administrated in the inner cithy and worked with gangs out of a police ministation on Chene. A Life on the Run, is a memoir by author, activist educator and former All-American sprinter Dr. John Telford, he recounts his battles against bigots, his sometimes scandalous love affairs, and his fights for racial equality.

Listen in Today for an Intriguing story from Dr. John Telford that has Love,Lust,Lies,Deceit, Politics and of course you know this can only happen in Detroit MI. Ascending to the Rochester Deputy Superintendency in 1984, he received lavish newspaper and television publicity for aggressively recruiting and hiring African-American teachers, principals, and directors despite considerable community opposition and midnight gunfire into his Rochester Hills home. After successfully weathering that storm and fully establishing his curricular and staffing innovations and enhancements, he retired as Deputy Superintendent in 1991 (despite having a three-year contract in his pocket), moved back home to Detroit, and continued to work full-time in several venues. But he also was incarcerated as a teen, was expelled from a Detroit high school for brawling with an administrator, made indiscreet and indiscriminate love with other men’s wives, was attacked for his controversial educational and social initiatives and for hiring black administrators in white schools, and was fired from a suburban superintendency for recruiting Detroit students against the wishes of white residents.

I interviewed him months ago and he was an engaging and entertaining guest. “What Old Men Know” (Harmonie Park Press, $16.95), Dr. John Telford’s second book for the local publisher, is considerably more than what it claims to be on the cover, namely “a definitive dictionary and almanac of advice”. This is a book of both wisdom and knowledge (old men know the two are not necessarily the same), anger and remorse, joy and pain. In many ways, this relatively slim 284-page volume, which indeed is laid out like a dictionary and can be read and enjoyed starting from any page, is The Book of Telford. The retired educator and track star has excelled at both of his chosen skills, but perhaps what he has excelled at more than either is the fine art of hell-raising. In “What Old Men Know,” it is the spirit of the hell raiser who lends the reader his glasses for an opportunity to view the world as he has come to know it. It becomes quickly apparent that Telford’s often harshly critical perspective of the way life works (versus the way it should work) is a view taken from a perch not many have earned the right to attain.John and I share lives full of high tension and controversy.While he was raising Hell in Detroit, I was doing the same in San Bernardino. We both fought for the rights of others and made many enemies and he made loads of friends, many who are famous. It should be quite a conversation.
